A Pocket Designed for Pocket Watches


When Levi Strauss & Co. introduced its iconic work jeans in 1873, wristwatches didn't exist in everyday life.


Cowboys, miners, railroad workers, and laborers typically carried pocket watches.


Keeping a watch loose inside a large front pocket often led to scratches or broken glass while working.


Levi's solution was surprisingly simple:


Create a small, dedicated pocket inside the front pocket where the watch could be stored safely and securely.


That little compartment became known as the Watch Pocket.




Why Is It Still There Today?


As wristwatches replaced pocket watches during the 20th century, the original purpose of the tiny pocket gradually disappeared.


Yet the pocket itself never did.


Over time, it became one of the most recognizable design features of a classic pair of jeans.


Today, people use it to carry things such as:

  • Keys
  • USB flash drives
  • Lighters
  • Rings
  • Wireless earbud cases


Even so, it's still commonly referred to as the Watch Pocket or the Fifth Pocket.

Early Levi's advertisements actually described this small compartment as a "Watch Pocket."


More than 150 years later, most traditional jeans still include it—not because we still carry pocket watches, but because it has become part of the timeless identity of denim itself.
