The Country That Went to War with 80 Soldiers... and Returned with 81

Among Europe's smallest countries, Liechtenstein has one of history's most unusual military stories.


The country has a population of only about 40,000 people, yet it is famous for a remarkable legend:


"Eighty soldiers went to war, and eighty-one came home."


It sounds impossible—but the story has a real historical foundation.




The Austro-Prussian War


In 1866, war broke out between Austria and Prussia.


At the time, Liechtenstein was closely allied with Austria through the German Confederation.


The principality sent 80 soldiers to guard a mountain pass along the border.


Interestingly, they were never sent into direct combat.


Instead, their mission was to protect the frontier and observe military activity.

How Did They Return with One More Man?


When the soldiers returned home, all 80 had survived.


According to a story that has been passed down for generations, the group returned with 81 people because an Italian liaison officer or civilian companion joined them on the journey back.


However, historians note that contemporary records do not clearly confirm this detail.


While the additional companion has become one of Liechtenstein's most famous legends, it should be viewed as a traditional story rather than an established historical fact.


What is well documented is that every Liechtenstein soldier returned safely.




Abolishing the Army


The experience had an unexpected consequence.


In 1868, Liechtenstein officially abolished its army.


The country concluded that maintaining a standing military force was unnecessary for such a small nation.


Since then, Liechtenstein has relied on its police force, diplomatic neutrality, and international cooperation for national security.

One of the World's Few Countries Without a Standing Army


Today, Liechtenstein remains one of the few countries in the world without a permanent military.


Despite its small size, it enjoys a high standard of living and is internationally known for its strong financial sector, advanced manufacturing, and stable political system.


Its peaceful approach has become part of its national identity.
